About the Michigan Lottery
The Michigan Lottery has been operating in the state for more than 50 years, having launched in 1972. The main aim is to raise money to support the state's education system, and more than $26 billion has been donated to the School Aid Fund since the lottery began. The company's headquarters is in Lansing but there are several other claim centers. The Michigan Lottery's network also includes more than 10,000 retail businesses, who benefit from sales commissions and bonuses.
The range of lotteries available in Michigan has gradually increased over time, with Mega Millions introduced in 1996 and Powerball in 2010. In-state games have also evolved to offer new features, such as Double Play for Lotto 47 and Fantasy 5, while there is also a wide selection of instant games.
Around 60 percent of the money from ticket sales goes straight back to players as prizes, which works out at approximately $2 billion a year. A single Mega Millions ticket sold in the Detroit suburb of Novi proved to be worth $1 billion in January 2021. This was the biggest win ever seen in Michigan, and the prize was claimed by a four-member lottery club known as the Wolverine FFL Club.
